Woody Johnson May Hire Charlie Casserly as a Consultant. Remember When Bill Belichick Ripped Casserly to Shreds?
By Jason McIntyre
Charlie Casserly had a good run in the Redskins front office in the 70s and 80s, and has three Super Bowl rings to show for it. Casserly was the assistant to GM Bobby Beathard when Washington won the Super Bowl in 1982 and 1987, and he was the GM on the 1991 Super Bowl-winning team.
After he left Washington, Casserly was the GM of the expansion Texans, and while his team never made the playoffs, he did make two significant draft picks: David Carr 1st overall in 2002 – a historically bad draft for QBs – and Mario Williams in 2006 over human highlight-machine Reggie Bush.
Why is Casserly worth a post today?
Because ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Jets owner Woody Johnson is ‘preparing’ to hire Casserly as a ‘consultant’ in the event the franchise needs a new GM (John Idzik) and new coach (Rex Ryan).
Which brings us to the headline. Remember in 2010 when Casserly ‘reported’ that Tom Brady was playing with three broken ribs? Bill Belichick provided the NFL with one of the most classic responses of all-time:
"“Who’s been wrong more than Charley Casserly since he left the Redskins? His percentage is like a meteorologist,” Belichick said. “He has no relationship to this team. I’d say less than zero. Based on what? He’s never at a practice, never at a game,” Belichick said before getting into a discussion of sports media practices in general. “At least he put his name on it which is more than a lot of guys. But, like he usually is, he was 100 percent wrong.”"
Shots fired, man down, REPEAT, MAN DOWN.
That’s an early Tyson KO right there.
Good luck with Casserly, Woody. Hope you reach outside of your circle of friends/recycleables to make these pivotal decisions
