Lucas Cañizares, a Real Madrid youth team goalie, allowed this comically tragic own-goal in a match vs. Sevilla last week. If it happened for the senior Real Madrid team the play would have spawned a thousand memes or whatever happens on the Internet when a sporting mishap is played for comedy. Cañizares’ teammates should some maturity rarely seen at the senior level. Instead of throwing tantrums because of their keeper’s folly, they walked over and patted him on the back.

Mistakes happen from time-to-time, you know.

Side note, Cañizares is the son of former Spanish international keeper Santi Cañizares. The elder Cañizares missed out on the 2002 World Cup when he stepped on a broken cologne bottle that tore up his foot. It paved the way for Iker Casillas to play for Spain. As we know in 2014 Casillas had a World Cup to forget in goal for Spain.
