Darren Carrington, a freshman wide receiver for Oregon who caught 14 balls for 291 yards and three touchdowns in the Ducks’ past two games, did not make the trip for the national title game after testing positive for marijuana on an NCAA-administered drug test. Beginning in July, marijuana will be legal for recreational use in Oregon, and ESPN’s Kenny Mayne made a strong point:

Mayne has opined similarly about marijuana in the past, and this tweet was vague enough so as to not implicate his colleagues, but it came shortly after an ESPN panel featuring Tim Tebow and Mack Brown talked about things like violating the sanctity of brotherhood by smoking weed. Yeah, these athletes know the rules, but just as much energy should be focused on questioning the purpose of testing them for recreational drugs when they’re not even employees.
