Jim Tomsula - Who? - is the New San Francisco 49ers Coach
By Jason McIntyre
Jim Tomsula is the new coach of the San Francisco 49ers.
And a football nation collectively asks, “who?”
Jim Tomsula, the pride of Catawba College. You know, the guy who was the defensive line coach of the 49ers for the last seven years. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Rhein Fire over in NFL Europe.
Insecure GMs do this. They fight with the smart guy who wins games, and then dump them in favor of the safe guy who isn’t going to challenge you on anything. Tomsula will keep his head down and coach the team. He won’t try to meddle at the draft or during free agency. GM Trent Baalke, who couldn’t get along with lifelong proven winner Jim Harbaugh, finally has someone to be his yes-man.
These kinds of marriages always work out well.
But Tomsula kind of looks like Stan Van Gundy and Ron Jeremy, so there’s that.
I’m sure 49ers fans are thrilled with this. Baalke and Harbaugh have been going at it for months – perhaps more than a year. They knew this move was coming. And that’s the absolute best job Trent Baalke could do?
Jed York’s going to be looking for a new GM – and coach – in about three years.
