In Depth Reporting by ESPN Confirms Johnny Manziel's Rookie Season was a "100 Percent Joke"
By Jason Lisk
Johnny Football didn’t play much of it in 2014. When he did, it was ugly. ESPN is on it with in-depth reporting, featuring “nearly” 20 Browns sources, along with other league sources.
The picture painted matches the info already readily available if you have not been living under a rock. One anonymous player called Manziel’s season a “100 percent joke.”
We also learned that Manziel was found “drunk off his a–” during that week 17 issue where he reportedly hosted a party on Friday night, and missed treatment.
Also, Johnny Football doesn’t like to put in the work as a backup, or in college when facing weaker opponents, and learned that trying to cram doesn’t work in the NFL, once he was named the starter. He got play calls wrong in the huddle and had to be corrected by teammates.
"Some veterans “clearly didn’t want to play for [Manziel]” because of the lack of readiness, and they responded better to undrafted rookie Connor Shaw in part because he knew the plays, sources said. It wasn’t lost on players that Shaw played through a dislocated finger on his left hand and a rib injury that had him passing blood after the season finale, while Manziel played six quarters before hurting his hamstring, then missed treatment on the injury on the final Saturday because he was still in bed."
New offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and owner Jimmy Haslam didn’t provide any kind of endorsement of Manziel’s future. “We’re not sure if our starting quarterback is in the building or not,” DeFilippo said.
Consider this article just another shot by an organization at Manziel to try to get him to take becoming the starting quarterback a little more seriously, in March and April, rather than suddenly trying to cram in September. I know that it’s the offseason, but it will be interesting to see just how much he gets in the news–for incidents of his own making, not just nonsense. I have a feeling the leash is pretty much worn down.
