Sepp Blatter has another former player challenger. This one has more heft and an even better head of hair. Portuguese Ballon d’Or winner Luis Figo announced he will run for the FIFA presidency.

"“Football has given me so much during my life and I want to give something back to the game,” said Figo. “I look at the reputation of Fifa right now and I don’t like it. Football deserves better. “In recent weeks, months, and even years, I have seen the image of Fifa deteriorate. “As I speak to many people in football – to players, managers and association presidents – so many of those people have told me that something has to be done."

The 42-year-old Figo veteran of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan must still pass FIFA’s “anti-corruption test,” which (a) is unbelievably a thing and (b) should be little trouble for a figure with no previous FIFA involvement.

Running down Figo’s strength as a candidate… He’s untainted by corruption. He looks sublime in a suit. He speaks English, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian. Head-butting Mark Van Bommel indicates moral fortitude. He’s unlikely to suggest female players wear hot pants to boost the sport’s popularity.

He also did well in the marriage department…
