Long Beach State's Super Mario Bros. Highlight Promo Is Pure 8-Bit Delight

Long Beach State plays Cal Irvine Saturday in a Big West showdown. To hype up the game, the school took on the Super Beach Bros. moniker and released this thoroughly well-done promo using 8-bit graphics and sound effects from Super Mario Bros. I’d watch basketball — or any sport, in truth — highlights set to these nostalgic sound effects all day. Well, not really, but in this small dose, it’s fun.

If you want to be negative and point out that all of the Long Beach players — unless they have some sort of Scott Bakula thing from Necessary Roughness going on — were born around five years after Super Mario Bros. game out on the original 8-bit Nintendo, be my guest. Perhaps Long Beach coach Dan Monson, who graduated from Idaho in 1985, is a big fan of the game.

Either way, that riff is infectious.
