New Michigan Fight Song Proposal Will Hopefully Die Unceremonious Death

Michigan has the greatest fight song in college football. A group of Michigan students, Hail and Unite, are trying to get university funding to create an alternate, modern one, maybe with Eminem.

"The Hail and Unite organization asked CSG to allocate $2,750 from its Legislative Discretionary Fund to the project: $1,750 would go toward funding for a promotional video to recruit donations from students, and $1,000 would go toward “speaker fees,” or accommodations for potential visiting contributors. While the song’s lyrics and tune are still undetermined, Weiss said it is the organization’s aim to involve big names in the music business and University alumni to contribute to the song. For example, he said Weinberg wants to get Eminem involved."

Here’s one way to tell an ill-conceived proposal on its face. “This project is meant to be, number one, extremely unique.” There are no degrees of uniqueness. It’s unique or it is not unique. Uniqueness suggests no inherent quality. You go to Michigan, fergodsakes.

What does a university sanctioned modern rally song look like? This.

Or this.

So much for “extremely unique.”
