Reggie Bush, the electrifying but frustrating running back of the Detroit Lions has been cut.

Bush, who turns 30 in a few days, was only on the hook for $1.7 million next season, so that’s not a significant enough savings to call him a ‘cap casualty.’ He spent the first five years of his career in New Orleans after it took him 2nd in the 2006, then was with the Dolphins for a year – arguably the finest season of his career (1,086 yards rushing and he scored seven touchdowns) – and was up-and-down with the Lions the last two years.

The Lions’ depth chart at running back heading into free agency looks like this: Joique Bell, Theo Riddick (20 carries) and George Winn (19 carries), who was a rookie from Cincinnati. If Detroit doesn’t go after a veteran running back in free agency, it seems like a need that will have to be addressed in the draft, where there’s a decent crop of running backs that will be available in the middle rounds.

As for Bush, he’s still best suited for a team that plays indoors on turf. The Colts are in need of a running back. The Vikings may lose Adrian Peterson. There’s always the Raiders, and a sleeper team may be the Eagles, because Chip Kelly would find a way to use him.
