Josh McCown Set to Choose Between the Buffalo Bills & Cleveland Browns
By Jason McIntyre
This is how poor the NFL free agent market is for quarterbacks: Josh McCown, a journeyman who turns 36 in July and has played in 73 games in his career and thrown 59 interceptions is set to choose between Cleveland and Buffalo.
Gross.
The Browns must feel that their starter last year, Brian Hoyer, is going elsewhere, and since last year’s rookie, Johnny Manziel, is in rehab, they obviously need a veteran. Enter Josh “I had a good half-season in Chicago!” McCown. In Tampa last year, McCown was an abomination, and he was released less than one year after signing with them.
The Bills, who are now being led by Rex Ryan, clearly want no part of the club’s 2013 1st round pick, EJ Manuel. Last year, they thought Kyle Orton would be a better option. Ryan briefly did well in New York with a guy he drafted, Mark Sanchez, but was quickly jettisoned after another guy he drafted, Geno Smith, flopped horrendously. [No, we’ll never know what went down in the front office with trading up to get Sanchez or getting Smith in the second round, but as a head coach with a direct line to owner Woody Johnson, Ryan obviously wielded a lot of power.]
Think Ryan wants to start off his time in Buffalo with a guy who wasn’t his? Nope. McCown’s 1st visit after getting cut by the Bucs was with Buffalo.
I don’t even want to imagine what the “loser” gets here, but it could be … Mark Sanchez.
