Dan Shaughnessy Weirdly Analogized John Calipari to Bill Cosby

John Calipari will have a jersey retired in his honor at UMass sometime next season, and this has raised an eyebrow among folk(s) in part because the coach left the school for the Nets as their Final Four appearance was getting vacated for Marcus Camby’s accepting gifts from an agent. Dan Shaughnessy, for one, is outraged:

Shaughnessy calls Calipari a “glorified AAU bag man,” says UMass looks “pathetic” for honoring him, and gratingly acknowledges that the coach excels in exploiting the system that has eroded the meaning of the student athlete.

And then we get to what was presumably the primary motivator for writing this column:

While one’s initial instinct is to poo-poo this as a self-important print media member sticking up for one of his own, it is really shitty to cut off a journalist’s access as revenge for having the audacity to report the truth. That being said, the rest of Shaughnessy’s column is smarmy and the comparison to Bill Cosby is asinine.
