Brian Hoyer, who won the Cleveland starting QB job last year, only to lose it due to ineffectiveness, is going to sign with the Houston Texans, according to NBC’s Dianna Russini. Hoyer figures to compete with … someone, for the starting job. Or perhaps he’ll compete with multiple QBs?

Tom Savage, a 4th round draft choice last year, certainly figures to be in the mix. But what about the two Texans QBs from last year, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Mallett? One has ties to coach Bill O’Brien dating back to his Patriots days (Mallett). So does Hoyer. But will Mallett sign with the Texans?

[UPDATE — BOOOOOOOOOO]

As a Jets fan, I selfishly hope that things don’t work out between the Texans and Mallett – think about it, if they drafted Savage and signed Hoyer, that’s a 3-way race for the QB job. If Mallett were to sign with the Jets, the 6-foot-6 former Arkansas star would have no problem beating out Geno Smith. Here’s hoping the pull of Bill O’Brien isn’t that powerful.

And if there’s one attainable QB out there that could get me to back off the Jets-need-Marcus Mariota, it’s Ryan Mallett. Big arm, oozing with potential, cleaned up his act off-the-field, and he’s cheap. Yes, he’s significantly better than Nick Foles, and it’s not close.
