Mike Francesa Was Apoplectic About the UCLA/SMU Goaltending Call

Mike Francesa relayed the end of SMU-UCLA to his legions of radio listeners on WFAN. There were several subjects of his anger. First, CBS for not immediately showing a replay. Second, the refs for not reviewing an unreviewable play, which he felt was off to the side and not a goal-tend (reasonable minds can differ). Third, Larry Brown for not having SMU foul when they were up by two because Bryce Alford was 8-10 from three-point range in the game.

“I do not believe this was in any way a goal-tend,” said the Pope, noting that he still hadn’t seen a definitive angle. “It looks like it’s passed the rim before he touches it.”

Eventually, Francesa would learn that the play was unreviewable, but still did not feel that the shot should have been called a goal-tend.
