Mike Williams, 2005 1st Round NFL Bust, Now a High School Football Coach
By Jason McIntyre
Remember Mike Williams, the stud receiver from USC? He had a monster first two years with the Trojans – 176 catches, 2,579 yards and 30 touchdowns – but then made a bad decision to try and enter the NFL draft only two years removed from high school. He tried to follow Maurice Clarett’s lead, but the courts blocked it so Williams had to sit out 2004 because he had hired an agent.
Still, the Lions took him 10th overall in 2005 and you know what happened next: He was a colossal bust, and had arguably the worst NFL career of anyone ever drafted 10th (though Blaine Gabbert could change that when his career is over). Williams was done in Detroit after two awful seasons, then the Raiders and Titans gave him a chance, but by 2007 he was out of the NFL.
He briefly returned the league in 2010 and 2011 and caught a total of 83 passes, but by 2011, he was done. His NFL career was over. He caught five touchdown passes and played in just 56 games.
But finally, good news!
Mike Williams, 31, has landed his 1st head coaching job at a high school in California.
Hopefully, Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell are paying attention.
