Taylor Swift Not Really Dating Orlando City's Sean St. Ledger is Your MLS Story of the Day

Is Taylor Swift dating an MLS player? Disclosure: that was a potential headline for this post and it would be a perfect, click-y SEO-friendly thing to get your attention, wouldn’t it? It wouldn’t exactly be factual, but whatever. It’s the Internet. No harm done, right?

So, anyways. Back on January 1st, Irish soccer player Sean St. Ledger posted a picture of himself hanging out with Swift. Since it only received 243 retweets I’m going to guess nobody thought much of it, which is odd given the cult of obsession over everything Swift does these days.

Earlier this week, Irish news outlet RTE sent someone to America to talk to St. Ledger — who at one time was considered a a future cornerstone of the Republic of Ireland National Team — about playing in MLS. Tidbits from the Irishman about playing alongside Kaka are one thing, but what really moves digital copy are Swift rumors.

Here are your direct quotes:

"St Ledger was coyer, however, when asked if he and pop star Taylor Swift were going out. “Eh, that’d be an exclusive for RTÉ, wouldn’t it. I’m sitting on the fence. “She’s not been to a game, as of yet. I’m thinking that she might come to one of the New York ones. We’ll see.”"

Given the nature of aggregation and the web, this stuff gets kicked and spun around. My heart breaks a little bit when respected soccer journalist Paul Tenorio — a man right in the middle of breaking the news of the potential MLS player’s strike — is reduced to writing about this story.

And in truth, this isn’t really even a story. St. Ledger posted something on Twitter, confirming Swift is still dating Calvin Harris.

All that said, if Taylor Swift were spotted at an MLS game in New York it would probably draw more traffic than most other stories coming out of the league. Alas.

As we should all know by know, it’s Taylor Swift’s world, we’re all just living in it.
