Manchester United doled out a fairly solid beating on rival Manchester City today at Old Trafford winning 4-2 for its first victory win in the last five derbies. Juan Mata made it 3-1 in the second half and then Chris Smalling converted an Ashley Young free kick to beat Joe Hart with a header to finish the scoring by United. (Mata appeared like he might have been offside before running onto the pass and subsequently beating Joe Hart through his legs.)

United, in third place — four better than City with six to play, have all but locked up a spot in the Top Four and trip back to the Champions League following a one-year absence. Louis van Gaal’s squad now looks like one that can contender with the best in England consistently. More importantly, who knew Young would be a viable contributor in the Red Devils’ lineup?

For City, questions will continue to linger for the defending champions, who now sit in fourth place. Expect plenty of stories speculating on the future of Manuel Pellegrini throughout the week (without naming a viable replacement). This is clearly the squad’s lowest ebb in recent years and faces a lot of changes in the summer.

Late in the match the cameras decided to focus on Pellegrini’s eyes in a tight shot as he stared off into the fourth place abyss. Man … this guy has seen some shit, right?

Sergio Aguero chipped in with his second goal of the game in the 89th minute, giving him 100 overall for the club. Of all the problems (potentially) facing City at the moment, the Argentine continues to perform and deliver the goals.
