Keeper vs. Keeper Showdown Yields Awful Penalty Kick Miss

The Campeonato Carioca is a fairly big deal in Brazilian soccer, as its the annual competition inside the city of Rio de Janeiro dating back to 1906. Earlier this week Fluminese and Botafogo met in the knockout round to see which team would advance to the final. The match went into penalty kicks and dragged out long enough so that keeper Diego Cavalieri and Renan had to take kicks.

Let’s just say the attempt by Cavalieri, who briefly played for Liverpool during the Rafa Benitez days, didn’t go so well. In fact the ball still might be in orbit.

Renan calmly placed his kick in the bottom corner and Botafogo advanced to play Vasco da Gama in the two-leg final.

All penalty kick shootouts should feature the keepers, in my humblest of humble opinions.
