Auburn’s annual sports awards ceremony – the “AUSPY’s” – were held on Monday night. Coaches and players take the opportunity to do videos and sketches and unwind after a grueling academic year. The highlight of this year’s AUSPY’s was a lip sync battle between men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl and women’s soccer coach Karen Hoppa. It was… awkward.

Hoppa starts with a jean jacketed version of “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Pearl answers with a wig and Taylor Swift. Hoppa answers that with ‘N SYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and Pearl finishes with Skee-Lo’s “I Wish.” I’m fairly certain Pearl didn’t know any of the words to any of those songs, but he really commits to his performance. Then at the end, a surprise guest appears who apparently only wins.

So, lip sync battles are a thing now, huh? I assume this is all Jimmy Fallon’s doing? It started with his late-late show. Now SpikeTV has a show. Heck, I even know a guy who is a groomsman at an upcoming wedding and the wedding party will be doing a lip sync battle. This is an epidemic. Did you know it’s been three years since the Summer of Call Me Maybe?
