Roger Goodell will preside over Tom Brady’s appeal of his four-game suspension, according to Mike Freeman. Earlier today, the NFLPA officially filed an appeal on behalf of Brady, and requested an independent and neutral arbitrator. “Given the NFL’s history of inconsistency and arbitrary decisions in disciplinary matters, it is only fair that a neutral arbitrator hear this appeal,” the appeal stated.

Well, Mr. “Inconsistent and Arbitrary” just exercised his right under the most recent labor agreement, and used his vast discretion to appoint himself to hear the appeal. Consider that a huge middle finger back at the NFLPA, Brady, and the Patriots organization in the wake of the appeal language, and the Patriots’ FJM-ing of the Wells Report. Pretty sure this is also another way of telling Robert Kraft that he is off the Christmas card list.

And this matter just elevated yet another level. Goodell doesn’t want to see someone come in and tell him where he potentially screwed up, like with his former boss Paul Tagliabue when independently reviewing the Bountygate punishments.

Expect more fireworks in the wake of this announcement.
