Colorado High School Baseball Team Uses 'Hidden Ball Trick' to Advance to State Championship
By Rob Perez
“It’s pretty, it’s so pretty!”
Rye High School in Colorado used the infamous “Hidden Ball Trick” on Saturday to record the final out of a Colorado Class 2A semifinal game vs. Hotchkiss High, and advance to the State Championship.
Rye pitcher Luis Ortiz staged a pick-off throw to second, then: the entire outfield pretended to retrieve the fake throw. The Hotchkiss baserunner bought the act, and thought he could easily advance to third — thus, he started running… only to quickly find out that the ball was not in Center Field somewhere, it was in Ortiz’s glove. Ortiz tagged the runner, and Rye won by a score of 9-8. Later that day, Rye won the state championship by defeating Resurrection Christian High School: 12-10.
Which ultimately brings us to the never-ending argument…is The Hidden Ball Trick “part of the game”? Or, is it a ‘cheap’ way to win? If you were a baseball manager, would you want your legacy to be remembered as the guy who won a championship because of “The Hidden Ball Trick”?
