After the tragedy in Charleston, I don’t blame you if you’ve lost faith in humanity. However: we occasionally stumble on a story which exemplifies how sports can change people’s lives for the better.

To elaborate, per NBC Charlotte:

"Carolina Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson sent a $100,000 donation to the families of the victims of the Emanuel AME Church shooting– $10,000 will go to each of the nine victims’ families to help with funeral costs, while the remaining $10,000 will go to the church itself as a memorial. "

Money is not going to bring these family’s loved ones back, but, nevertheless: it is a selfless, genuine gesture which I personally hope gets the recognition it deserves.

Early Saturday morning: South Carolina Lieutenant Governor candidate Bakari Sellers, who’s collecting and accounting donations for the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund, tweeted out the letter and notification he received from the Panthers’ owner.

It reads:

"In honor of Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, The Reverend Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, The Reverend Daniel L. Simmons, Sr. and Myra Thompson, please accept the enclosed check from the Carolina Panthers in the amount of $100,000 to provide $10,000 per family to help defray funeral costs and other financial needs of each, and $10,000 for the church as a memorial honoring the victims. Our hears are one with those who grieve the loss of these individuals. Respectfully, Jerry Richardson"

If you are interested in donating to the same Emanuel AME Church relief fund, you can do so here.
