NBA Free Agency: Summer of the 2-Year Deals?
By Jason McIntyre
NBA free agency begins at 12:01 am on July 1st, and here’s a quick primer to get you excited for all the madness. The biggest names possibly moving this year include Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge (he’s visiting seven teams, or 23% of the NBA), Chicago’s Jimmy Butler (Lakers rumors swirl, but most signs point to staying in the Windy City), Cleveland’s Kevin Love (probably staying in Cleveland for a year or possibly leaving via a sign-and-trade), Miami’s Goran Dragic (chasing one big final deal or staying in Miami?) and LA’s DeAndre Jordan.
Do the big names opt for short deals to take advantage of the rising salary cap in the next two summers? Or, given last year’s injury woes to just about everyone, do players play it safe and get paid now?
LeBron was last year, and Kevin Durant will be next year (unless he signs a financially-smart 1-year deal). But this sandwich season of free agency could include a DeMarcus Cousins trade, which combined with 2-3 of the players listed above moving, would make this another July to remember.
