Floyd Mayweather Stripped of Boxing Championship Belt You Don't Care About
Floyd Mayweather owns a bunch of belts. According to Wikipedia, Maywatehr retained the WBA (Super), WBC, Lineal and The Ring Welterweight titles when he defeated Manny Pacquiao in May. He also won the WBO Welterweight title. Today’s big story is that he lost the WBO welterweight title.
No, he didn’t misplace it or have it stolen. He was stripped of his title by the WBO because he didn’t pay a $200,000 fee. (Yes, a $200,000 fee.) Mayweather was due to pay .001% of his purse and didn’t bother. Why? Who knows. Floyd Mayweather does what he wants because he’s a true rebel.
Mayweather has also been holding WBA and WBC titles in multiple weightclasses, which is against those organization’s rules for some reason. That means those organizations could also probably strip Mayweather of his titles if they really wanted the attention that the WBO is currently getting.
Would any of that keep people from buying his next fight? No. Because boxers and boxing writers are the only ones who care about boxing’s numerous belts. Via ESPN:
"“It’s a complete disgrace,” Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com. “Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he’s enjoying a couple of hundred million he made from his last outing and this has zero impact on anything he does."
And even then, some boxers don’t care about the belts either. At least not enough to pay less than 1% of a night’s work.
