Deron Williams Wants Nets Buyout to Join Dallas Mavericks

Deron Williams is working with the Brooklyn Nets on buying out the remaining two years — and $43.3 million left on his contract. Per ESPN’s Marc Stein, if the sides can reach an agreement Williams would likely sign a free agent contract with the Mavericks. Stein writes that Brooklyn hasn’t found any trade partners for Williams and that they’d rather buyout the contract than waive him for salary cap purposes.

Looking at this from afar, I know the Mavericks — Mark Cuban especially — are steamed they missed out on DeAndre Jordan, but is going after Williams the right follow-up move? The point guard turned 31 on June 26 and saw his numbers decline across the board this past season thanks in part to a career-low 39 percent shooting from the floor. Then again, Williams is from the Dallas area and the Mavericks would be buying low.
