Nick Faldo played his final round at The Open Championship today, shooting a 71 on the Old Course at St. Andrews. It was a happy ending for Faldo after a first round 83. It turns out that his final walk around The Open almost didn’t happen. At some point yesterday, Faldo hurt his hand on some deer antlers while putting on a shirt. And somehow, with all the media covering The Open, it appears that no one knew about the freak accident until he told Tom Rinaldi in his post-round interview.

Except, of course, the girl behind him in the queue at the hospital.

Yes, the 1987, 1990 and 1992 Open champion went to the hospital this morning and didn’t feel well enough to play. His kids talked him into it. He then went out and birdied 17 (the hardest hole on the course), posed for some pictures on Swilcan Bridge, and called it a career.
