Brad Sham is one of the legendary voices in football, doing the radio broadcasts for the Dallas Cowboys (other than a three-year hiatus) since before Jerry Jones had even come to town. He’ll miss the opener, though, because the Cowboys’ Sunday Night debut falls on the first night of the Jewish New Year.

The single game fill-in will be none other than Uncle Verne, Verne Lundquist, who will return to Dallas to call play-by-play for the Cowboys for the first time since he left the broadcast team after the 1983 season.

" It wasn’t until the end of June when Sham finally was able to broach the subject with Lundquist over the phone. “I was hopeful,” Sham said. Lundquist listened. “It took me about 10 seconds to say yes,’’ Lundquist said in an interview. Lundquist, who celebrated his 75th birthday Friday, will work the Georgia-Vanderbilt game Sept. 12. He’ll fly to Dallas-Fort Worth on Sunday morning and arrive in plenty of time for the game. "

To get you in the mood, here’s Verne with a legendary call of a famous play in the Steelers-Cowboys Super Bowl after the 1978 season.
