Over the weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, got married in Portugal. Ronaldo served as the best man and per the BBC bought him quite the lavish wedding gift: a Greek Island for the tidy price of at least three million Euros. ($3.2 million as of Monday morning conversion rates.)

At first glance this sounds ridiculous, but this is Ronaldo we’re talking about, the same person who reportedly paid his stylist to groom his statue at a wax museum. If any professional is buying private islands for their agent, it’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

If you’re not a European soccer junkie, the name Mendes might not mean much to you although it probably should. Mendes is almost as if you took all the guys labeled “Super Agents” during the 1990s in America and rolled them into one. His client list includes Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho, James Rodriguez, Angel Di Maria, Diego Costa, Falcao and others, meaning Mendes is a powerbroker behind the scenes at some of the world’s biggest clubs, namely Chelsea and Real Madrid. About a year ago, The Guardian wrote about Mendes’ power and influence in the sport.

Maybe HBO will do a show about Mendes’ life in the future. Either that or a reboot of Arliss.

And if you happen to be in the market for an island of your own, this website might be of help.
