Patrick Kane, one of the best hockey players in the NHL, is reportedly the subject of a police probe in Western New York according to the Buffalo News. Police wouldn’t confirm or deny “the existence or nonexistence of a criminal investigation” into the 26-year old Kane because he hasn’t been charged with a crime. In fact, police seem downright defensive about whatever’s happening with Kane.

The police wouldn’t even let the Buffalo News access the weekend’s police blotter, and told them to file a Freedom of Information request. Kane’s lawyer had nothing to add. So if you’re scoring at home, nobody is denying that something is being looked into.

[UPDATE: WKBW TV in Buffalo says the police are investigating an incident involving Kane “and a woman that began at a bar in Evans.“]

Kane, the Chicago Blackhawks star who has helped lead the team to three Stanley Cups, is one of the best players ever to come out of Western New York. Like most 26-year olds, Kane likes to party, and that’s got him in trouble before.

In 2009, Kane and his cousin were arrested in Buffalo after they didn’t have cab fare and ended up punching a cab driver in a dispute over less than a dollar. In 2012 he went on an epic partying streak at the University of Wisconsin, and this might be Kane passed out at a bar. He allegedly was tossed out of bars and fraternity houses that weekend.

Kane signed an 8-year, $84 million extension in the summer of 2014.

UPDATE (12:56 PM): The Buffalo News reports:

"Patrick Kane, the star player of the Chicago Blackhawks who grew up in South Buffalo, is the target of a rape investigation by Hamburg police for an incident that occurred over the last weekend, two law enforcement sources have told The Buffalo News. A local woman has accused Kane of a sexual assault, the sources said. The law enforcement sources said that the woman went to a hospital and that tests using a rape kit were performed. Kane, 26, has a home in Hamburg. He has not been charged with any crime."

The Buffalo news has filed a Freedom of Information request seeking details of a possible criminal complaint.
