As previously mentioned, ball boys and ball girls are a tough lot to predict. They’re either starring in highlights or bloopers. It’s feast or it’s famine with them.

The ball boy stationed down the left field line during yesterday’s Tampa Bay-Oakland game did his very best to bring positive press to the profession by making a legitimate diving Web Gem on a hard hit ground ball. His heroic efforts saved a few members of the Athletics bullpen who were directly in the path of the ball.

It’s not unreasonable to assume they’d have had to lift their legs, move a few inches out of the way — or even field the grounder themselves had he not sprang into action.

The hustle play delighted everyone on hand, with the likely exception of the A’s clubhouse manager, who was forced into allotting resources to removing a pesky grass stain out of a ball boy’s white uniform.
