The soccer world is no stranger to weird rumors, especially during transfer season. Consider this report from Brian Lewis of the New York Post among one of the stranger ones. According to the Post, Donald Trump wants to purchase Argentine soccer club San Lorenzo with his business partner Alessandro Pronto. Previously the pair tried to purchase Colombian club Atletico Nacional for $100 million, but were rebuffed when the club wanted $150 million.

Anyways, the headline here is that Trump wants to buy the club that just so happens to be the favorite of Pope Francis. Fill in the blanks there, yourself.

Per the Post’s report, Trump has only sent a “statement of interest” to the club.

In recent years, domestic soccer in Argentina has faced economic woes along with violence on-and-off the field.

Update: Trump dismissed the Post’s report on Friday.

San Lorenzo also dismissed the story.
