Patriots Deny Chris Mortensen's Claim Robert Kraft Apologized to Him for "the way this thing has gone down"

Chris Mortensen appeared on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Thursday and the conversation naturally turned to Deflategate. The ESPN reporter, who recently deleted his erroneous, seven-month-old tweet that claimed the Patriots’ AFC Championship Game footballs were under-inflated by two pounds each, said both Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft called him to apologize “for the way this thing has gone down.”

According to WEEI, though, this never happened.

Mortensen’s relationship with WEEI right now is far from ideal. Earlier this month he backed out of a scheduled interview to discuss his coverage of the scandal. It’s also worth pointing out the passionate defense Boston sports radio has been trotting out for Brady and the Patriots since news of underinflated footballs broke back in January. Mortensen seems to have become the face of the big, bad media. In short, there’s no love lost.

The Krafts calling up to apologize seems unlikely. Mortensen fabricating the story also seems unlikely, especially because it’s something that could easily be refuted by the primaries involved.

Whatever happened, this latest twist — along with Brady’s still-pending suspension appeal — assures Deflategate will continue to stay in the headlines until the NFL regular season begins.
