The pirate ship is listing to port and taking on water. The Washington State Cougars lost 24-17 to FCS Portland State. They had entered the game as 31-point favorites. The Cougars fall to 12-26 under Mike Leach entering his fourth season.

Woes were similar for Washington State. They couldn’t stop the run. Portland State ran for 233 yards and 3 TD on 48 carries. They had their obligatory special teams gaffe. A fumbled punt return set up the Vikings on the Washington State 11 for the game-winning touchdown.

Touted by some as the best conference, the Pac 12 has not had an auspicious start.  Washington State is the third team to fall to non-Power 5 opposition this weekend. Stanford managed just six points in a loss to Northwestern. Arizona also labored in a 10-point win over UTSA.
