Jacksonville State Passed Up a Chance to Upset Auburn in Regulation by Taking a Knee, Eventually Lost
By Kyle Koster
With the ball and a 20-13 lead late in the fourth quarter, Jacksonville State had Auburn on the ropes.
The flirtation with one of the biggest upsets in college football history became much more difficult when the Tigers tied things up with 39 seconds left in regulation. A kickoff out of bounds gifted Jacksonville State possession at their own 35. With one timeout remaining, it seemed like the 41-point underdogs would have one last chance to pull off the stunner in regulation.
Instead head coach John Grass and his staff opted to take a knee and play for overtime.
Why? No idea.
As soon as the decision was made, one just knew Auburn would win in extra time. And guess what? Auburn scored a touchdown on the opening possession overtime and then thwarted Jacksonville State to prevail, 27-20.
One of the few advantages David has over Goliath is having nothing to lose. Seems odd the Gamecocks wouldn’t give it a shot. Then again, I’m not a football coach — just a humble yet courageous blogger.
