Bevo XIV Will Miss Game Against Oklahoma with "Life-Threatening" Condition

The Texas football season hasn’t gone all that well to this point. The Longhorns have dropped four of their first five games. Calls for Charlie Strong’s job are beginning to crop up. Players are retweeting transfer pleas during games — when they’re not going after other teammates via the social media platform.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, now the mascot is suffering from a life-threatening condition. The university announced Bevo XIV, a 2,100-pound steer who has held the position since 2004, won’t be traveling to Saturday’s Red River Rivalry game against Oklahomar.

"“Bevo is a fighter, a symbol of strength and who fans across the world care deeply about,” Ricky Brennes, executive director of the Silver Spurs Alumni Association, said in a statement. “We are carefully monitoring Bevo’s condition at this time and will update the public as we find out more about his condition.”"

Bevo himself had no comment. He prefers to let his lifetime record (106-41) do the talking, I guess.

To be quite honest — and sorry, Bevo if you’re reading this — the news could come as a blessing and disguise. The team needs something rally around.

A big ol’ animal is as good a thing as any.
