The Kansas City Royals’ World Series victory parade will take place tomorrow during the day. School districts all over the city have started to cancel classes after reading the tea leaves on the worthiness of holding class on the day the city will be celebrating its first title in 30 years.

I just got an automated call announcing that school has been canceled for tomorrow. I also got the following e-mail from the Blue Springs school district (located about 12 miles east of Kauffman Stadium):

"After careful consideration the Blue Springs School District will cancel classes on Tuesday, November 3rd. It is clear that the excitement surrounding our World Series Champions and their celebration in the middle of the day will disrupt school and the quality of learning. The school day will be rescheduled on a date to be determined."

They aren’t wrong; we were already planning on taking the kids out of school to go to the parade. I’m sure that’s not unusual. Who knows how long until this happens again? The Kansas City Chiefs, for example, haven’t won a title in my lifetime.

One of my most memorable moments was having to quickly run up to the school in the middle of the day while the Royals were completing a game 4 comeback against Houston, because the game was still going and it was pickup time, and everyone waiting in the pickup line was buzzing about the game, and the kids were running out of the school to give updates. It was a true community affair.

A quick survey shows that Blue Springs isn’t the only school district in the Kansas City area shutting down for the day.
