Here's a Dumb, Basic, Misleading Comparison of Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers has been benched for arguably the biggest 1st round bust since Ryan Leaf: Blaine Gabbert. That’s how bad things are in San Francisco. They’re going to start Gabbert Sunday at home against the Falcons. He threw seven passes last season; the year before, he was cut by the lowly Jaguars.

Anyway, this is about Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton and the above tweet was so dense it warranted criticism.

1) Newton is an MVP candidate because the Panthers (so far) are 7-0 and they’ve got hideous offensive weapons. They’ve got a Top 3 CB in Josh Norman and perhaps the best MLB tandem in the league in Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly. That defense helps overcome Newton’s turnovers (especially the last two weeks).

2) Kaepernick isn’t the same QB he was during his rise in the early Jim Harbaugh years. He fell apart last year, caught in the middle of a tug-of-war between the front office and Harbaugh. Also, Kap’s offensive line went from the top of the league to the bottom, and the turnover at skill positions has been considerable (Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore). The 49ers defense isn’t keeping them in games, and will definitely not be able to overcome turnovers.

3) The better comparison would be Cam Newton and Andy Dalton, two surprising QBs on undefeated teams.
