The biggest surprise in the top four is Alabama. The Crimson Tide is ranked ahead of undefeated Baylor, TCU, Michigan State, Iowa, Houston and Memphis.
As previously pointed out, the names next to the numbers will change every Tuesday night. Judging incomplete resumes with no real-world stakes in a made-for-television program on an early November night is nothing to get all worked up about. But this is college football — meaning people will get worked up no matter what the rankings look like.
The fact that brand names Ohio State, Alabama and Notre Dame received favorable positions despite easily identifiable deficiencies will do little to quell the predictable rage.
Iowa fans, however, may have a legitimate bone to pick if the committee is weighing entertainment value over results.
