Detroit Lions Fire GM Martin Mayhew and President Tom Lewand

Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand are out in Detroit, where the Lions are 1-7. This is a dramatic upheaval for a team that made the playoffs last season, but it was evident that something needed to be shaken up. With this move, the hourglass is running low on coach Jim Caldwell, and one wonders what the longterm status of quarterback Matthew Stafford will be.

Mayhew had been with the Lions organization since 2001, and the team’s general manager since Matt Millen was fired in late 2008. Lewand had been with the franchise for 19 years, including five seasons as president.
