Alex Ovechkin took 15 shots on goal in the Capitals’ loss to the Red Wings on Tuesday night. Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek turned all 15 of those shots away and Ovi was held scoreless. If 15 shots sounds like a lot, that’s because it is.

You have to go back nearly half a century to find an NHL player taking that many shots in a single game without scoring a goal. Ray Bourque took 19 shots on goal over the course of a single game in 1991. He scored 1 goal. Since that game, only three players have taken 15 or more shots on goal in a game – Marian Hossa, Dave Andreychuk and Ovie, twice. Ovi’s game against the Red Wings was the first time the player did not score.

A semi-interesting footnote – Gordie Howe was apparently held scoreless on 19 shots during a game in 1955. That total is unofficial.
