J.J. Watt and Andy Dalton Engage in Lame, Boring, and Confusing War of Words

The Houston Texans beat the undefeated Bengals on Monday night in Cincinnati, 10-6. After the game, superstar defensive lineman J.J. Watt quipped about how the Texans defense made the “Red Rifle” (Andy Dalton) look like a “Red Ryder BB Gun” (the desired gift in A Christmas Story). That’s good stuff because those are both red firearms of very different ballistic capabilities.

As far as insults go in the NFL, this one seemed kind of harmless. Yet Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton seemed a bit flustered by Watt’s comments.

Here are his comments transcribed via ESPN:

"“I’m disappointed in him because of the integrity of this game,” Dalton said. “I have a lot of respect for him. He’s a really good player. There are a lot of kids and people who look up to him, and for him to make comments like that, he’s just showing that’s acceptable to say that kind of stuff.” “It’s disappointing for one of the best players in this league to come out and say something like that, so that’s all I’m going to say about that. He’s a good player, but for him to be one of the best in this league and to show that integrity, it shows what he’s about, and that’s disappointing.”"

Did Watt say something else about Dalton’s mother that wasn’t broadcast? What the hell is he even talking about? How does a Red Ryder BB Gun reference reflect on his integrity? And of all the things in the NFL, why is this something kids shouldn’t be exposed to? This sounds like maybe Dalton was just a little salty because the Bengals lost their first game of the season. Hopefully, this “feud” dies right here with Watt rolling his eyes while holding another secret workout while cameras are rolling.
