Charlie Strong hasn’t even been at Texas for two seasons, and the rumors are already starting: Might he leave Austin for Coral Gables to coach the Miami Hurricanes this offseason?

Miami media have been whispering about Charlie Strong taking the job since Al Golden was fired in October. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports said the same on FS1 Monday night.

Surely some Miami fans will argue against Strong, citing his 6-7 record last year, and 4-6 mark (so far) this season. They probably wouldn’t mention that Mack Brown left the cupboard completely empty – the Longhorns probably won’t have a player drafted – and Strong took on a rebuilding project.

There’s obviously the largely unspoken cultural subtext to the 1st African-American football coach at the University of Texas. Strong has said Texas is the best job in college football, but as Feldman noted on FS1, that may not mean he thinks it is the best situation for him and his family.

Miami, which is ground zero for some of the best high school recruits in the country, could be an ideal spot for Strong. At Louisville, Strong made a name is a noted disciplinarian and excellent recruiter. Those traits would have an immediate impact at Miami, who are loaded with talent – especially at QB, where future pro Brad Kayaa will be a junior – and could be a sleeper in the ACC next year to challenge Clemson.
