Bill Belichick Demanded to Know WTF Was Going On with Running Clock

The New England Patriots were able to kick a game-tying field goal against the Denver Broncos at the end of regulation despite losing several seconds to a running clock during the drive.

After Tom Brady completed a pass to Scott Chandler, Broncos defensive end Malik Jackson sustained an injury making the tackle. Since Denver didn’t have any timeouts remaining, they were charged an “excess timeout” which stopped the clock at 24 seconds while Jackson left the field of play.

Time began to tick on the referee’s ready for play signal though– something the Patriots weren’t anticipating. The result was the ticking away of a handful of crucial, potential game-changing seconds.

Bill Belichick was quite upset with the situation and let a member of the officiating crew know about it with a few choice words.

Stephen Gostkowski would go on to boot a 47-yard field goal to cap the drive and set up C.J. Anderson’s overtime heroics.

Belichick not knowing a rule is equally, if not more, surprising than the Patriots surrendering a 14-point lead to lose for the first time this season. I was under the assumption Belichick’s bedside reading table was permanently occupied by the NFL Rulebook (and the My Cousin Vinny screenplay, of course)
