Kyler Murray is Transferring from Texas A&M, and Kevin Sumlin is Definitely on the Hot Seat

Did Johnny Manziel make Kevin Sumlin? That’s a fair question to ask given the most recent developments at Texas A&M. To recap: Sumlin was tremendous at Houston in 2011, guiding the Cougars to a 12-1 record, and then he left for Texas A&M.

With Johnny Manziel throwing to Mike Evans, the Aggies were outstanding in Sumlin’s first year, winning at Alabama, going 11-2 and finishing the season ranked 5th in the country. The media fell in love with Sumlin, and recruiting took off.

The Aggies weren’t quite as good in year two (9-4, finished ranked 18th), but they really fell off the next two years: 8-5 (3-4 in the SEC West) and 8-4 (4-4 in the SEC West). Sumlin hasn’t finished above .500 in the gauntlet that is the SEC West since his first season.

Things have cratered this offseason: Kyle Allen, an elite high school QB who probably has an NFL future, decided to transfer. (Then, he sub-tweeted the coach.) Today, the team’s other bright young QB, Kyler Murray, decided he too is going to transfer.

Murray reminded me of a young Mike Vick in the limited time he played last season, but the true freshman had plenty of work to do. Still, the future looked bright. But in a week, Sumlin went from a QB controversy to having no QBs.

According to ESPN, Murray can’t transfer to any SEC school or any school on the Aggies’ schedule for the next four years. A lot of times that’s unreasonable, but I’ve got no problem with these restrictions from Texas A&M.

The Aggies have tons of talent on the roster – WRs Ricky Seals-Jones and Christian Kirk and defensive end Myles Garrett are among their best at their position in the SEC – but can they win without a QB?

Good luck, Kevin Sumlin.
