Presenting their NFL Players Association card at the theater, current and former NFL players will be able to view the controversial film Concussion for free, courtesy of Sony. As you’re probably aware by now: the film’s plot focuses on a doctor who discovers the truth behind brain trauma suffered by football players and takes on the league in both the lab and the court room.

Per Rebecca Ford from The Hollywood Reporter: producers of the movie, Ridley Scott and Giannina Scott, said in a statement:

"“This is a movie for the players, so we wanted to give them a chance to see it before its nationwide release and free admission during its run in theaters … The movie is so inspiring – Will Smith gives one of the best performances of his career as Dr. Bennet Omalu, a man who shined a light on the truth. The odds were stacked against him, but he had the truth on his side, and now, his discovery is all anyone’s talking about. We think the players will enjoy watching this movie about Dr. Omalu’s incredible courage – courage that changed the game.”"

It sounds as though the impact of the film is substantial, as New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis has screened the film and told Kimberley Martin of Newsday that it “hits home pretty hard” and “it makes you think about other things, but at the same time, I think I’ve still got a lot of football to play. But you never know with these things. This is something serious.”

Hmmm. ‘Controversial’ is an understatement in re: to the potential fall out of this movie’s debut.

Here’s the official trailer, in case you missed it…
