Browns Fire GM Ray Farmer, Head Coach Mike Pettine

Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine have joined the unemployment line. After yet another dismal season in the factory of sadness, the Cleveland Browns sent both their general manager and head coach packing on Sunday.

Pettine wrapped up his second season as the team’s head coach with a 28-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and was set for a meeting with team brass after the game. The Browns finished 3-13 this season, following a 7-9 record in his first year. Pettine’s tenure was marred by off-field distractions, largely centered around star wide receiver Josh Gordon (suspended, didn’t play this year) and quarterback Johnny Manziel (rehab, benched for partying). The 49-year-old coach could never get a good handle on either player and that helped sink him.

The Browns were actually 7-4 in November 2014 and poised for a playoff spot but cratered down the stretch, and since then are 3-18.

Farmer was just as responsible for Cleveland’s awful last two seasons. He took over as the team’s general manager before the 2014 season and drafted two significant first-round busts in Manziel and cornerback Justin Gilbert. Farmer was also suspended by the NFL for texting coaches about playcalling during games, which violated the league’s electronic device policy. Basically, his time in charge of the Browns has been memorable for all the wrong reasons.

With so many holes on the roster, the Browns need a complete overhaul. They must find a new quarterback, several offensive linemen, some impact players on defense, and could use more weapons at the skill positions. Basically, they need a totally new roster.

Looks like it’s time for yet another full-blown rebuild in Cleveland.

Given that the team plays in the loaded AFC North and has an absolute buffoon for an owner, Cleveland is likely the least attractive open job in the NFL. The current version of the Browns has never won a playoff game and hasn’t reached the postseason since 2002. The last time an NFL team in Cleveland won a playoff game was 1994. Aside from a dedicated fanbase, there’s really nothing appealing about the Browns right now.

Expect and up-and-coming coordinator to take the head coaching gig, as an established head coach will options would likely pass up the job Cleveland.
