Hue Jackson To Be the Browns' Next Ex-Coach

Hue Jackson is finalizing a deal to become head coach of the Browns, per Adam Schefter and Mike Silver. Jackson, the current offensive coordinator of the Bengals and former head coach of the Raiders, was scheduled for an interview with the Giants, and was a candidate with the 49ers. Reading the tea leaves, it seems like he could’ve had the San Francisco job if he wanted it, and it was thus far unclear how high up he was on the Giants’ totem pole.

In his return, Jackson has shown himself worthy of another head coaching job. Nevertheless, Cleveland is a landing spot that I’d personally avoid if I had options. To say nothing of his off-football entanglements, Jimmy Haslam has mowed through head coaches—Pat Shurmur, Rob Chudzinski, and Mike Pettine. He reportedly overruled his front office to pick Johnny Manziel over Teddy Bridgewater. He brought in a baseball guy as chief strategy officer (which might actually be considered a savvy move if someone with a better track record had made it).

Perhaps this latest regime change is the one that leads to the continuity that Haslam covets of the Steelers, who have had fewer coaches since the late 1960’s than the Browns have had since Haslam bought the team in 2012. However, granting that the 49ers administration also has some baggage, they’ve at least got a track record of some success, and the potential of Colin Kaepernick bouncing back from his doldrums at quarterback. The Giants, if Jackson could’ve gotten that job, are known for their patience and collaboration.
