The Oregon Ducks demoted Don Pellum. They have hired their new defensive coordinator, former Michigan Wolverines head coach Brady Hoke. It’s an interesting hire.

Hoke was well liked at Michigan, results aside. He did recruit the players who produced Michigan’s excellent defense (when healthy) last season. The Wolverine defense was not that terrible the year before. He was also a standout defensive line coach.

The failed high profile head coach as coordinator gambit has worked well for multiple teams. Alabama just won a national title with Lane Kiffin. North Carolina’s hire of Gene Chizik worked out very well. Ohio State just hired Greg Schiano.

The major difference: Hoke has never been a defensive coordinator. He went straight from defensive line coach at Michigan to head coach at Ball State. He hasn’t called plays. He, notoriously, never wore a headset at Michigan. Oregon’s issue last year was…having an inexperienced coordinator.

Eagerly awaiting the discordant shots of him wearing sleek Oregon gear.
