Oregon State forward Jarmal Reid was ejected late in last night’s game against Utah for intentionally tripping referee Tommy Nunez. Frustrated at a no-call after he was sent tumbling to the ground to secure a loose ball, Reid stuck his foot out as the referee ran by and sent him tumbling while making eye contact.

Nunez was immediately ejected. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott is expected to review the play on Monday. It’s tough to imagine that there won’t be further penalties.

Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle said he’d review the entire play with Reid but said his player “swore he didn’t do anything.” The video suggests otherwise.

In many ways, Reid’s incredulous reaction after clearly knocking a referee down with purpose is the logical ending point for decades of basketball players arguing obvious fouls out of habit. Like, what was Reid thinking here? The game — like most games — was being televised so it’s not as if there was any way he’d get away with such an action.

Perhaps the flapping of the arms in disgust is more of a disbelief that he got caught in real-time than after the fact.
