Rugby is a rough, physical game. It thrives when there is mutual respect between competitors. Sure, they’ll lay devastating hits without the benefit of pads but there are certain lines never to be crossed.

Like grabbing an opposing player’s groin and giving it a nonconsensual tug.

Actually, that rule is less rugby-specific and more a general part of being a human being.

Glasgow’s Ryan Wilson executed the dirty move in a Sunday European Champions Cup match against Northampton. His victim’s name — and you couldn’t make this up — is Lee Dickson.

Wilson could face a stiff penalty for his actions.

"Under World Rugby guidelines, the offence of “testicle grabbing or twisting or squeezing” carries a suggested punishment of 12 weeks at the low end of the scale, to 18 weeks for a mid-range offence, and anything from 24 to 208 weeks (four years) at the top end of the scale."

The fact that such a guideline is in the books suggests gonad-twisting is a routine enough offense that it had to be addressed. The semantics are also compelling. What constitutes a grab? How is a squeeze different than a twist? These are serious questions to be decided by serious people.
