Warren Moon on Cam Newton: "You'd think he raped like five pastors' daughters"

Cam Newton is ahead of Hall of Famer Peyton Manning right now for “storyline of Super Bowl week,” and the gap is only going to widen when this Warren Moon quote makes the rounds. Talking to Mike Garofolo of Fox Sports, here’s what Moon said about the Cam Newton criticism:

"“You’d think he raped like five pastors’ daughters over the last five years and he’s getting away with it the way people are talking about him.”"

That’s a significant exaggeration, obviously, but more importantly, who is it directed at? The small pocket of Panthers fans who don’t like his celebrating? The media? I’m curious. The Cam Newton/race discussion isn’t a strawman, but who is Moon talking about?

I think it is best summed up this way: People fear what they don’t understand. Nobody understands why Cam Newton celebrates as much as he does. After every first down. After every touchdown. Literally, no QB in NFL history has celebrated this much. (The Aaron Rodgers belt celebration was akin to Cam’s old Superman reveal. They were both short and nobody cared.) If Newton were starring as the QB in New York or California or a more liberal state, would some fans still have issues with the celebrating? I say no. But nobody could possibly know because this has never happened before at the QB position. Reminder: He’s got the Panthers 17-1 and in the Super Bowl and he’s the MVP.

Hey, only six more days of this madness!
